REGENERATIVE GYNECOLOGY AND MENOPAUSE TREATMENT
Menopause is the age at the last menstrual period and reflects the end of ovarian activity. When ovarian activity stops and the ovary reduces its production of hormones, the pituitary gland responds by producing large amounts of other hormones, FSH and LH. These hormonal imbalances tend to cause hot flashes, insomnia, irritability, and even depression. Not all women experience symptomatic menopause, but others have significant symptoms that affect their quality of life and health.
Menopause should be treated whenever it causes symptoms or comes with osteoporosis. There are many very safe treatments for these hormonal imbalances, which can improve these women’s quality of life. In general, the best-tolerated treatments are based on bioidentical hormones, that is, hormones chemically identical to those produced by the human body, mainly 17-beta estradiol and natural micronized progesterone.
The aim is to mimic the body’s natural physiology by adjusting the dose according to each patient’s symptoms and characteristics. There are different forms of administration: topical or systemic.
Both menopause and childbirth can cause changes in the vagina that make sexual intercourse less pleasurable or even painful (dyspareunia). In menopause, the so-called genitourinary syndrome is common; in addition to dryness, atrophy, and dyspareunia, it includes incontinence, urgency, and urinary tract infections.
There are multiple treatments to reverse this situation. Topical vaginal treatments with estrogens and androgens improve symptoms but are sometimes insufficient.
The Benuren vaginal rejuvenation laser that we use in the clinic has the advantage of being painless, since it is a diode, non-ablative laser. It is applied to both the vulva and the vagina. Three sessions about 15 days apart are usually recommended. The laser increases the absorption of other active ingredients with which it is combined, such as hyaluronic acid and growth factors.
